Swedish Lapland in 2023 was the first time I picked up my Sony α7 IV and carried it with intention, not just as a camera, but as a way of seeing. We travelled north chasing the northern lights, hoping for one of nature’s great spectacles, but what I found was something quieter and far more lasting.

It wasn’t our first time in the Arctic, but this trip felt different. I wanted to immerse myself in the culture, to learn more about Sámi traditions, and to understand how people live in relationship with the land. Lapland has a way of slowing you down. The stillness is not empty, it’s full of detail, texture, breath. The snow softens every sound, the air sharpens every sense, and the landscape invites you to pay attention.

With that camera in my hands, I fell in love with travel and photography at the same time. I began noticing the interaction between light and snow, the way colour shifts in the cold, the quiet resilience of the environment. The northern lights were unforgettable, but it was the everyday beauty, the way the landscape holds its own rhythm, that stayed with me.

That trip became the spark for where we would begin “The Pause Project” in 2025

It inspired us to return to the Arctic, not just to witness its beauty, but to understand how the seasons shape life. We wanted to see the contrast of winter’s deep stillness against summer’s endless light.

Experiencing the midnight sun inside the Arctic Circle changed my perspective completely. The landscape felt familiar yet transformed, revealing new colours, new contours, new stories.

Travelling through Finland, Norway, Sweden and Iceland, we saw how the environment shifts and how people adapt with it. Winter and summer became two different worlds, each with its own character and quiet lessons.

Lapland was the beginning of the moment I realised that photography wasn’t just something I enjoyed, but something that connected me to place, culture and stillness. It taught me to pause, to look closer, and to honour the landscapes we move through.

And it set me on a journey that continues to shape everything I create.
